Stockholm’s travelers enjoy digital ticketing solution from HID
A comprehensive digital ticketing solution from our Group company HID has transformed the daily travel experience for passengers across Stockholm and its neighboring municipalities.
The initiative has eliminated reliance on paper tickets and enables seamless contactless payments across local train, tram and metro services, buses and ferries.
Stockholm’s public transport authority, SL, needed a modern ticketing system for the 2 million people in the Swedish capital and its surroundings. Its reliance on paper tickets and transit cards no longer met public expectations in a digitally advanced society.
SL wanted a digital solution to enable contactless payment, including through mobile apps. It needed to facilitate a consistent ticket and validation experience throughout its entire transit network, including hardware that would be resilient in Stockholm’s harsh winter conditions.
Our solution includes VAL100 ticket validators for 2,600 buses delivering NFC/RFID and contactless payment functionality for tickets and travel passes – whether passengers present them on a smartcard, mobile phone or paper ticket.
We also deployed VAL150 validators on ferries and tram and train station platforms, featuring a waterproof design that withstands Stockholm’s harsh weather while maintaining the same multi-format payment technology.
“The SL deployment represents one of our most comprehensive transit implementations to date,” says Tony Kington, Managing Director at Access-IS, HID. “Our open architecture is specifically designed for customers like SL, who need to stay future ready as new technologies and customer behaviors emerge.”
