Megadoor doors enable safe access for the world’s largest openings
ASSA ABLOY’s Megadoor doors protect some of the world’s largest industrial openings. The solutions secure shipyards, aircraft hangars and wind turbine factories designed for large size and demanding conditions.
Customers in these sectors need doors built for extreme size and harsh environments. Megadoor doors reach widths of more than 50 meters and heights exceeding 30 meters, while remaining stable in strong wind, cold climates and coastal locations. Each solution includes features such as reinforced fabric for low temperatures, anti-fall safety devices and storm locks that secure the door during severe weather. Safety and security elements are adapted to each project’s requirements.
The doors operate using a vertical folding design. Metal beams run across the opening, with durable fabric panels between them. Hoist units lift the door using steel cables, allowing it to fold upward in horizontal sections. The design supports smooth operation even at very large scale.
Most projects begin with a tailored design phase. Sales, engineering, production and project management teams work together to ensure each solution meets technical and operational requirements. Installation uses the door’s own hoisting system, reducing the need for cranes and lowering risk on sensitive sites such as airports.
Originally developed in Sweden in the early 1970s for timber-drying facilities, Megadoor doors have evolved into a global solution for large industrial and aviation buildings. Demand continues to grow, especially in renewable energy, where manufacturers need large openings to move oversized wind turbine components directly from factory to transport.
“Every project starts with the customer’s challenge,” says Cecilia Sonne Gruvstad, Sales Manager at Hangar and Large Application Doors EMEA, Entrance Systems. “Our role is to deliver a door solution that works safely and reliably in their environment, no matter the size.”
