World-leading university committed to sustainability chooses Aperio

St Andrews University, which aims to achieve net-zero by 2035, picked Aperio as it seeks more sustainable access control solutions to reduce its carbon footprint.

St Andrews University practices what it preaches when it comes to sustainability. The University’s vision is to be net-zero by 2035, well ahead of the EU average of 2050. It is also home to the renowned St Andrews Prize for the Environment, a major international initiative recognizing and supporting innovative responses to environmental challenges.

When the University needed to upgrade the access control technologies at student halls, the managers sought an access control solution that reflected their institutional principles on sustainability.

Aperio, with its wireless, easy-to-install, and energy-saving features, proved to be the perfect option for the University’s needs: convenient and energy-efficient access control solutions that can provide easy and secure access on campus. University security managers enjoy the efficiency benefits of monitoring and controlling access in multiple buildings from a single point and in real-time.

“Aperio interfaces with our central access control system, which gives us central management and control,” says Pauline Brown, Associate Chief Information Officer at the University of St Andrews. “We get 24/7 monitoring and reporting when required.”

As a wireless solution, Aperio devices offer significant energy efficiency benefits compared to wired ones. They also consume zero energy when idle and operate on standard batteries, saving a great deal of idle electricity waste. The maintenance of Aperio involves a battery change every two years, making it more cost-efficient for the University.

Furthermore, the Aperio devices integrate fully and work flexibly with both the University’s existing central system and their student ID card management system.

“The world-famous University of St Andrews in Scotland has been a customer of ASSA ABLOY for many years,” says Jason Boyce, Education Sector Business Development Manager, ASSA ABLOY Opening Solutions EMEIA. “In the longer term, they plan to have Aperio deployed to all existing and new student accommodation settings as they come online.”
