Turning sustainability initiatives into action at Ameristar
By putting sustainability at the top of its agenda, ASSA ABLOY Group company Ameristar is implementing a program of multiple improvements to significantly reduce its energy use.
Initially partnering with a local university who provided an energy audit, Ameristar, a manufacturer of high-security fences and gates, based in Tulsa, USA, identified the key areas to reduce its energy use, water consumption and waste.
By installing energy meters to track its energy use on a granular level, Ameristar has pinpointed its significant energy users and initiated improvements such as lighting upgrades.
Water usage reduction is an important focus area. “We have identified many opportunities for water re-use in our milling process, re-using our coating line baths and through behavior changes,” says Kristin Ruyle, Sustainability Engineer, Ameristar.
Thanks to a new green team, Ameristar is constantly looking at ways to improve, including a waste heat recovery project. “We can pipe warm air from our compressors directly back into our facility and use that for heating in the winter,” Kristin says.
“As a corporate entity it’s important that we do the right thing, for our people and for the planet, and we can do all of those things through sustainability.”
