ABLOY BEAT meets severe weather challenge

Finnish transport company Kaukokiito helped ABLOY to test the BEAT padlock in real action on the Helsinki-Kuusamo road, running 800 kilometers from southern Finland to the north. With temperatures ranging from minus 37 degrees centigrade to plus 4 in a single day the lock was sure to face a severe examination.

“In the winter a lot of corrosive material, from road salt to gravel and pitch, is thrown up from the road,” says Toni Sandholm, Joensuu area terminal manager for Kaukokiito. “In addition, severe temperature fluctuations between Helsinki and Kuusamo bring their own challenge to locks that can accumulate ice of up to 10 centimeters on either side.”

Hanging at the back of the truck through snowfall, rain and freezing wind, the lock has worked flawlessly despite the demanding conditions. 

“The lock works properly and opens despite ice accumulating on the outside because there are no parts in the lock where which water could accumulate,” Sandholm says. “The test shows that the product works wherever winter conditions are severe.”
