Safeguarding Finland’s national treasure

The century-old station, designed by world-renowned Finnish architect Eliel Saarinen, is considered an architectural icon and national treasure. With daily traffic of 250,000 visitors, it required a seamless, non-disruptive update to its locking system as part of a broader modernization effort.

Before PULSE, key management at the station was challenging. Keys were often misplaced, and managing access rights for tenants and service providers was cumbersome. The digital PULSE system streamlined access with a single key, allowing customizable access rights through cloud-based software. Now, tenant changes are handled smoothly, with no need for reprogramming each lock.

For property manager Susanna Mehtonen, one crucial aspect of the renovation was to preserve the station’s historic look. “The retrofit feature of PULSE allowed us to update the system by simply replacing lock cylinders,” she says. “This allows us to avoid alterations to the station’s heritage-protected doors.”

Powered by the key itself, ABLOY PULSE requires no wiring, simplifying installation and meeting the strict regulations of the Finnish Heritage Agency.
