Sustainability

With buildings generally accounting for around 40 percent of energy consumption in society, the focus on sustainability in the construction industry has increased over the past couple of years. We are committed to sustainable buildings and entrances, offering energy-efficient doors, high-quality materials and EPDs.

We have a comprehensive range of automatic swing, sliding, and revolving doors that help reduce commercial buildings' costs and energy consumption. Our doors offer the most value across three key building segments – retail, healthcare, and private commercial buildings.

Energy-efficient doors

When a door saves energy, the whole building saves energy. Doors and windows are the apparent vulnerabilities when it comes to maintaining indoor climates – they’re thinner than walls and allow external weather to rush in when open. While windows tend to remain closed, doors are required to open and close several times each day for a building to function. Automatic doors are faster, smarter, and more suited to high foot traffic than manual doors. Therefore, automatic doors are necessary for sustainable commercial buildings, helping to minimise heat transmission, air leakage, and air infiltration.

Our automatic doors can:

  • Minimise energy loss
  • Improve indoor air quality
  • Increase daylight
  • Control air circulation
  • Optimise overall energy performance of any building

Energy-efficient solutions for high traffic areas

Reduce your carbon footprint and increase your savings with innovative solutions that keep energy consumption low. Whether you're running a healthcare facility, transportation hub or distribution center, high traffic areas demand energy-efficient solutions. But you don't want to sacrifice user comfort for energy efficiency. Automatic doors provide the perfect balance. Smart sensors ensure that the door will only open when people need to pass through and that the door closes quickly once they’ve passed through. This allows you to have close control over both airflow and energy loss.

  • Retail

Retail is about more than moving things off the shelves. Your business depends on keeping people and goods flowing smoothly.

  • Healthcare

Keep hospitals and healthcare centers ready for anything with anti-bacterial door surfaces, sealed environments and touchless entrances.

  • Distribution and logistics

To keep up with the demands of the distribution and logistics industry, fast, safe, and energy-efficient operations are essential. Solutions that promote a good flow of goods is crucial.

  • Transportation

Restricted zones. Streams of passengers. Extreme weather. Automated doors on a massive scale. From the departure gates to the emergency exit, we get passengers and cargo safely on their way.

How to meet new energy-saving requirements

In response to the pressing need for sustainable development, energy-saving requirements have emerged across Europe, with governments implementing measures to combat high energy prices and ensure gas supply security. As businesses strive to follow these regulations, upgrading your entrance solutions presents a crucial opportunity to improve energy efficiency and reduce costs.

By installing automatic doors in your hotel, store or warehouse, you can make a significant impact on your energy consumption and costs. Automatic doors are designed to minimise energy loss, improve indoor air quality, increase natural daylight, and optimise overall energy performance. Not only will you be saving money on energy bills, but you'll also be contributing to a greener future.

Looking for energy savings? These doors have got you covered.

Lower energy bills with energy-efficient doors

Did you know that door openings and access points are responsible for up to 11% of the energy loss in your building? Upgrading your entrances with energy-efficient doors is a crucial part of reducing energy consumption and limiting related costs.

Energy-efficient doors provide greater airflow control and minimise air leakage, ensuring that your indoor climate is preserved while reducing energy waste. With the right door type, your business can save significant amounts of energy, leading to lower energy bills and a smaller carbon footprint. The greater control you have over how much hot or cold air flows from inside to outside your building, the more efficient your entrances are, and the more significant your savings will be. Let your door do the heavy lifting and watch as your entire building becomes more energy efficient.

Regular service is key to energy efficiency

Regular maintenance of your doors is important for their energy efficiency An automatic door that doesn’t close when intended can lead to increased energy consumption for several reasons.

  • The open door allows air to escape from the building, causing the HVAC system to work harder to maintain a comfortable temperature. This means that the heating or cooling system will need to consume more energy to compensate for the lost air.
  • If the open door is near a thermostat, it can give a false reading of the room temperature, causing the HVAC system to continue running even when the desired temperature has been reached.
  • An open door can allow unwanted drafts or outside air to enter the building, which can affect the air quality and temperature inside.

All these factors can lead to increased energy usage, higher utility bills, and a less comfortable indoor environment. Regular maintenance of your doors will help ensure that they close properly and efficiently, reducing energy waste and associated costs.

When high-quality equals sustainability

With our commitment to high-quality service, we ensure sustainability throughout the lifecycle of each product. Regular servicing and product care maintain a product's energy-saving properties while promoting safe operation through well-maintained materials. This results in reduced need for door replacement, minimised downtime and lowered costs in the long term. Using high-quality materials means a sustainable choice, ensuring the building's longevity. A perfect example of that is BREEAM Outstanding Metro supermarket outside Vienna, projected by architect Adreas Prehal.

Compliance and EPDs

ASSA ABLOY is one of a handful of corporate partners of the World Green Building Council – a responsibility we're immensely proud of. We also have a comprehensive collection of Environmental Product Declarations (EPDs), enabling decision-makers to take a transparent view of each product's lifecycle. The performance of our automatic doors across the globe contributes to buildings' environmental ratings, including BREEAM, LEED, HQE, DNGB, nZEB, and Greenstar. Looking for a specific EPD? Check out the download section on the product’s page.
