Electric strikes and door closers
Doors must be easy to operate while ensuring fire protection, access control, and energy efficiency. The solutions from ASSA ABLOY (Switzerland) AG. combine both: electric strikes from the effeff brand for access control, and door closers with Cam-Motion and Free-Motion technology for ergonomic opening and compliant closing.
What is the difference between electric strikes and door closers?
Electric strikes release doors electrically and enable access at the push of a button. They integrate with safety systems and allow access via an intercom system, access card, or app, for example.
Door closers can close doors automatically and in a controlled manner after opening. They meet fire protection requirements and European barrier-free access standards.
Important: A door with an electric strike is not locked for insurance purposes and must be locked manually at the end of the business day.
How does an electric strike work?
An electric strike releases the lock latch in the striking plate area after receiving an impulse. The user can then simply open the door.
The functions available are:
- Operating current: current only flows when actuated; energy efficient and standard in most applications
- Quiescent current: continuous current keeps the door locked and opens it in the event of power failure, for example for escape routes
- Locking mechanism: keeps the door open after unlocking until it is closed manually
Modern electric strikes also offer monitoring contacts, adjustment options, and universal voltage for flexible installations.
Why are door closers important for accessibility?
Doors with a high level of opening resistance become a barrier for older people, people with reduced mobility, or parents with strollers. High-quality door closers solve this problem using special technologies:
- CAM-Motion: reduces opening resistance thanks to optimized mechanics
- Slide tracks: allow particularly ergonomic opening
- Free Motion: door opens with almost no resistance and then closes reliably when necessary (fire, etc.)
- Close-Motion: the gentle damping and closing of the door mean that subsequent adjustment work on the door closer is no longer necessary.
The result: barrier-free access while meeting safety requirements.
What requirements do door closers meet in fire protection?
Fire protection regulations require doors that close reliably. Only fully closed doors prevent the spread of fire and smoke, work with access control systems, and ensure thermal sealing.
Requirements for door closers in fire protection:
- Compliance with EN standards for fire doors (DIN EN 1154, DIN EN 1155)
- Reliable closing force even with frequent use
- Compatible with fire and smoke protection doors
- Functionality in escape routes
Specialized electric strikes with additional safety features are available for special applications such as fire and smoke protection doors.
