Hospital security: ASSA ABLOY access and locking systems

Reliable security solutions for smooth everyday operations in medical-social facilities: Hospital security requires carefully planned and efficient security systems that protect patients and caregivers and ensure accessibility. Burglary protection, time control unit of visiting times and the definition of access rights play a decisive role in improving patient security in a modern hospital.

Why hospital security is so important

In contrast to conventional buildings, hospital security solutions must withstand some special requirements and safety-related risks: During visiting hours, the hospital is open to visitors, patients and caregivers all year round, while high security standards apply during nighttime hours.

In addition, some facilities, such as operating rooms or intensive care and quarantine stations, must be permanently shielded from the public. Evacuation plans, rescue access and emergency escape routes also play a major role in the planning of security solutions for a hospital. Patient security is paramount.

Developed by ASSA ABLOY experts: We invest a lot of time in planning and consulting to meet your needs. In addition to new construction projects, upgrades and retrofits in existing buildings are of course also possible. Whether by telephone, email or the contact form – we will be happy to advise you!

Security Challenge in Hospitals

A hospital is a public space with busy operations. Every day of the year, hundreds of people pass through the doors of a hospital, health clinic, psychiatric facility or nursing home – from patients to visitors, nurses and doctors to technicians or cleaning staff. As a result, the demand for locking systems and security solutions is enormous.

Unlike conventionally used buildings, ensuring security in the hospital is a challenging task that requires a lot of planning for security service providers. A detailed security concept should include the following aspects, for example:

  • A locking system in the hospital requires defined access authorizations for certain areas and rooms.
  • These must also be time-limited: Patients want to receive visits during the day and enjoy a secure environment at night.

  • Areas requiring special protection are located in the administrative wing, in the hospital wards and in the intensive care and quarantine areas.

  • Staff rooms and medicine cabinets should also be well protected.

Decisions on access rights and design of locking systems

Hospital operators should therefore make decisions on the following points in advance of deciding on an appropriate locking system:

  • Who is allowed to enter which rooms and when?

  • How is it possible to get out of the buildings in an emergency?

  • How much effort should be invested in managing the door systems?

  • How convenient should the use of the doors be?

Mechatronic and electronic locking solutions that can be easily programmed and adapted are important for achieving this. ASSA ABLOY offers you a full range of consulting services, including an optimized solution tailored to your building.

Hospital access control: Overview of important requirements

Important guidelines for planning access control in hospitals are:

  1. High flexibility in assigning access rights without additional costs
  2. Adaptable solutions for hospital and care security
  3. Easy expandability or reduction according to requirements, as necessary
  4. Accessibility for the entire building
  5. Free building access during visiting hours
  6. Guaranteed functionality of emergency escape routes with escape doors
  7. Ensuring fire protection through special measures
  8. High level of user convenience, which makes the hospital more attractive

Hospital security – mechanical and electronic solutions from ASSA ABLOY

Complete security solutions for the healthcare sector enable secure and smooth processes in hospitals, clinics, wellness clinics and nursing homes. ASSA ABLOY has the right solution for every door in the building. The versatile door systems are particularly flexible, adaptable and expandable.

Whether mechanical or electronic solutions: Our products meet high standards in terms of security, protection and user-friendliness. We also attach great importance to the fact that the solutions can be conveniently managed by the employees on site and are virtually maintenance-free. Simple replacement work by the company’s own facility management is also possible in some cases to ensure smooth access to the hospital.

KESO locking systems and ePED escape route technology

A mechanical locking system that can be combined with mechatronics, such as the KESO 8000Ω2 locking system, ensures that hospital employees no longer have to spend their time using extra keys for different sensitive areas. However, a completely electronic or mechatronic locking system, such as KESO eCLIQ or KESO Integra, combines a high level of security in hospitals with flexible application options. Reliable escape route technology also plays a decisive role in hospitals: With the help of modern ePED technology, escape door systems are electronically controlled, and a high level of security is guaranteed in the event of danger.

  • KESO 8000Ω²

KESO 8000Ω² is a modular mechanical locking system with secure cylinders. In the KESO ULTRA version, hard metal elements secure the cylinder against drilling.  Manipulation by breakage, extricating or drilling is impossible. Thanks to modern technology, the reversible keys can be easily supplemented with electronic components. The combination with electronic access control systems can be achieved, for example, with an integrated RFID chip. This allows time recording systems and other applications to be implemented.

  • KESO eCLIQ

The KESO eCLIQ locking system is also suitable for use in hospitals, nursing homes, psychiatric care facilities, etc. The electronic locking system can be used both indoors and outdoors and offers flexibility in blocking and granting individual access rights. If a key is lost, it is disabled using associated software. The standardized format allows mechanical locking cylinders to be easily replaced. This means that the conversion in the building can also be carried out gradually. This is an advantage for fire doors or escape doors, for example.

  • KESO Integra

Whether stand-alone or an offline or online solution: With the KESO Integra mechatronic access system, you can electronically expand your existing mechanical locking system to include additional areas. If the spatial layout of the hospital changes or new rooms and wards are added, you can easily manage the modular access solution in the k-entry management software. With this program, authorizations can be granted in the locking plan or directly in the building plan.  The intuitive access assignment and use of RFID technology allow KESO Integra to provide a high level of security – even in the event of key loss.

  • ePED technology

The use of advanced ePED technology (electrically controlled Panic Exit Device) pays off in the area of escape route technology. ASSA ABLOY offers one of the first ePED escape route systems with touch display in the terminal.  Electrically controlled emergency door systems ensure problem-free locking of the doors for escape routes in the respective escape direction. The ePED technology is certified and ensures the highest level of security. The system is operated via a central escape route control system. All system components are perfectly matched to each other.

Flexibly distribute access authorizations

Whether medication cabinets or files containing patient data, operating rooms, IT equipment or clinical laboratory – all doors in a medical-social facility can be opened with just one key if required and if the access authorizations are programmed accordingly. You can also restrict authorizations for a limited period of time, for example, for cleaning personnel or technicians. This enables you to achieve a high level of security in the long term as well as the highest possible flexibility of authorizations – and all this for minimal administrative effort.

Secure access into the hospital

A high level of security in hospitals and clinics is not a luxury but rather a top priority: It should be possible for employees to manage an access system conveniently on site, and adjustments should be possible with little effort and low costs. Electronic locking systems in particular ensure a high level of security in public buildings and make time restrictions and restricted access authorization possible with minimal effort. Barrier-free emergency exits serve to protect all people and are an important measure in a well-thought-out security concept.
