ASSA Surface treatments

Many of ASSA’s products have some form of surface treatment. So why do we surface treat our products? Surface treatment creates coatings that protect against, or at least delays the corrosion process. Another reason is for functionality. We want to achieve a surface that has a good wear resistance or low friction. The last reason- and not least important – is to make the product aesthetically pleasing.

ASSA Surface treatments 

Prion (01)

Prion is a nickel free surface treatment fitted for people with contact allergies. Prion has a good durability and is suitable for both indoor and outdoor use in public and private environments. Galvanic plated alloy of copper, tin and zinc. Meets the requirements for nickel regulation in accordance with EU directives 94/27/EC.

Nickel (02)

Nickel has very good durability and is therefore suitable for doors with a high opening frequency. Nickel, however, is allergenic and can cause problems for people with nickel allergy. Galvanic plated nickel on brass or steel. Steel details are less suitable for outdoor environment.

Addion (03)

Addion is an antibacterial and nickel free surface treatment that eliminates all bacteria on the surface. It’s suitable in environments where many people are in circulation and germs are easily spread. As the bacteria is spread through hands and objects that hands are put on, Addion-treated fittings are a natural choice to reduce the risk of spreading infections. Galvanic plated alloy of copper, tin, zinc and silver. Addion has good durability and is suitable for both indoor and outdoor use. Meets the requirements for nickel regulation in accordance with EU directive 94/27 / EC. Addion effectively breaks down bacteria and is tested against JIS 2801: 2000.

Bright Chrome (11)

Bright Chrome is a very durable surface treatment, suitable for both indoor and outdoor use in doors with high opening frequency. Galvanic plated nickel and chrome on brass and steel.

Satin Chrome (13)

Satin Chrome is a very durable surface treatment, suitable for both indoor and outdoor use in doors with high opening frequency. Similar to bright chrome apart from satin brushing that is done before chrome plating.

Polished Brass (20) 

Polished brass is an alloy of copper and zinc. When the brass oxidizes, its character changes and the surface changes in appearance. This process is speeded in coastal environments, after which the brass get a more antique look. Brass details are polished to high gloss thereafter they are coated with a clear coat. Steel details are plated with copper and zinc. The durability of the coating is limited. Not suitable for outdoor use in coastal environments. Details made of brass passes EU Directive on nickel regulation. Steel details do not pass the EU Directive on nickel regulation.

Satin brass (21)

Satin brass is similar to brass apart from the satin brushing.

Stainless steel (31)

Satin brushed stainless homogenous material with extremely strong corrosion resistance and durability. For decorative fittings in indoor and outdoor environments where the demands on corrosion protection and scratch resistance are extra high.

Brown oxide (44)

Brown Oxide is a decorative finish that wears out after a time of use due to the limited durability. This means that the fittings get a more antique look. The brass surface oxidizes to a brown-black color in an oxidizing solution, thereafter loose oxide is removed with a steel scraper, whereupon the details are coated with a clear coat. The durability of the coating is limited. Brown oxide is less suitable for outdoor use in coastal environments.

Steel details are first plated with a nickel layer, then a layer of copper. The copper layer is oxidized, scraped and coated as above. The durability of the steel details is limited and not suitable for outdoor use.

Zink-Alloy (48)

Zinc-Alloy is a galvanic plated zinc layer alloyed with iron. The zinc-iron layer is treated with a blue passivation and sealer to improve corrosion protection. It does not withstand heavy wear. It can be used indoors and outdoors. Zinc-Alloy provides an extremely high corrosion protection, about five to ten times higher than normal blue passivated zinc (ASSA surface treatment code 57).

Zink-Alloy (52, 53, 54)

Zinc-Alloy is a galvanic plated zinc layer alloyed with iron. Zinc-Alloy is preferably used when surface treating lock cases and hinges. The zinc-iron layer is treated with passivation to improve the corrosion protection. (ASSA surface treatment code 52, 53, 54, black layer). It does not withstand heavy wear. It can be used outdoors and indoors.

Blue passivated zinc (57)

Blue passivated zinc is a galvanic plating of zinc on the steel that is preferably used when surface treating lockcases and hinges. The zinc layer is treated with a passivation to improve the corrosion protection. A sealer can alternatively be added in order to improve the corrosion protection further. Blue passivated zinc has a very good durability and is suitable for both indoor and outdoor use. (Alternatively, with a sealer ASSA surface treatment code 58).

Powder coating (63, 64, 65, 67, 77, 92)

Powder coating is an organic layer of lacquer. The layer consists of a mixture of epoxy and polyester. The powder is applied on the details electrostatically. After the application has melted, the powder gets cured in a curing oven. In order to get a good corrosion protection, even if the coating layer is damaged, the zinc is always plated on all steel details before painting. Powder coating is available in a variety of colors. Powder coating has excellent durability and is suitable for both indoor and outdoor use. Passes the EU directive on nickel regulation.
