How to chooes a panic exit device: European legislation
Not all panic exit devices are the same. There are different products available to meet varying installation needs, safety requirements and specific requirements.
It is not always clear, however, which device is the right one to meet these requirements.
When choosing a product, there are three main factors to consider:
- the relevant European standard for the door on which the device is to be installed (EN 1125 / EN 179);
- the type of door (standard door or fire and smoke-resistant door);
- the door’s security requirements to protect against unauthorised access (surface-mounted devices or mortise devices with a security lock);

European standards for panic exit devices: EN 1125 and EN 179
There are currently two European standards in force for devices installed on emergency exits or panic exits: EN 1125:2008 and EN 179:2008.
EN 1125:2008 standard
This standard governs panic exit devices operated mechanically by a horizontal bar, which may be push-type (Type A device) or contact-type (Type B device).
These products are installed in buildings open to the public, where users who are not trained in emergency procedures typically have access and where, consequently, panic is more likely to occur in dangerous situations.

EN 179:2008 standard
This standard governs emergency devices operated mechanically by a lever (handle) or a push pad.
These devices are installed in buildings not accessible to the public, where access is therefore restricted to authorised personnel who have been trained by the company in emergency procedures.

When to use EN 1125 or EN 179 devices
Buildings open to the public:

The CE marking
The CE marking on the product certifies that the panic bars and other panic exit devices are manufactured in accordance with standards EN 1125 or EN 179.
Since February 2005, it has been compulsory in Italy to install only devices bearing this marking on doors located along escape routes (Ministerial Decree of 3 November 2004 and subsequent amendments/additions – including that of the Ministerial Decree of 6 December 2011)
Old, non-CE-marked panic exit devices already fitted to doors prior to that date had to be replaced with compliant devices by 16 February 2013.
