Rotating disc cylinders: a comprehensive guide to high-security cylinders
As burglary techniques continue to evolve, the search for high-security solutions that are effective against these methods has become increasingly important.
Rotating disc cylinders are now one of the most advanced solutions for security doors, high-security buildings and settings where the highest level of security is required.
Let’s find out together how they work and why they are so effective.
What are rotating disc cylinders?
Rotating disc cylinders are locking devices that use a series of discs instead of the pins, counter-pins and springs found in traditional Europrofile cylinders.
This technology was invented by Emil Henriksson, a precision engineer and inventor, in Finland in the early 20th century. Shortly afterwards, it was patented and the ABLOY brand was founded, which was the first to market this type of cylinder.
Only a key with the correct code can align the profiles of the combination discs, thereby allowing the lock to be opened.
What makes disc cylinders so secure?
There are several reasons why rotating disc technology is one of the most resistant to common break-in attempts:
- Resistance to bumping – The bumping technique exploits the presence of pins and springs to insert a specially shaped blank key and align them. In disc cylinders, there are no pins, counter-pins or springs to exploit.
- Extremely difficult to pick – Skilful lock-picking is extremely difficult with these devices, thanks to mechanisms such as the Disc Blocking System in ABLOY Protec² cylinders, which prevents the discs from being manipulated individually.
- Longer service life – As there are no springs or other components prone to accumulating dust and debris, the mechanism remains more reliable over time. Furthermore, the disc cylinder can incorporate other mechanisms, such as the ABLOY Protec² Anti-Wear System, a specially shaped disc that accommodates the end of the key and absorbs the stresses of opening, reducing wear on internal components.
- Key-duplication-protected locks – ABLOY Protec² disc cylinders feature a patented key profile that ensures only the manufacturer can supply the blank keys required for duplicates, and that these are distributed exclusively to authorised centres. Furthermore, in order to have a duplicate made, the ownership card supplied with the cylinder must be presented to the specialist centre. This makes it extremely difficult to produce unauthorised copies.
- Highest security certifications – Rotating disc technology is considered one of the most reliable, even by international security standards. For example, the ABLOY Protec² platform is certified to EN 1303 (at the highest classification level) and SKG***.
Rotating disc cylinders are now one of the most reliable security solutions for homes, businesses and critical infrastructure, offering superior resistance to break-ins, high durability and patented protection.
