The 6th biennial edition of the flagship Wireless Access Control Report is now available

Now running for more than a decade, the ASSA ABLOY report once again highlights ways for security professionals to contribute to overall ROI. Written in clear, business-friendly language, it also helps non-specialist decision-makers to stay on top of what’s happening now across digital access – and more importantly, to get their access ready for what’s ahead.

For the first time, the 2025 edition finds that wireless (fully or partly) systems have overtaken wired-only deployments among those who manage access digitally. In its ongoing digitalisation, access is also becoming a wireless-first technology.

Survey data and analysis – researched with International Security Journal and presented throughout the Report – are based on almost 500 responses from those who work in roles across security and facilities management. Their focus now seems to be on intelligent integrations which cement access control's critical role in the new generation of smart, secure, efficient buildings. 

Key findings: sustainability, cyber–physical resilience, mobile and more

According to the International Energy Agency, buildings consume around 30% of global energy. The Report confirms that end-users increasingly want concrete ways in which digital access can help to reduce unnecessary use. Indeed, for 27% of survey respondents, sustainability is the top factor when weighing access management investments. 

For digital access, sustainability is moving from a supporting role to a strategic driver, reflected in growing demand for green building solutions and documentation such as Environmental Product Declarations (EPDs). These count towards certification schemes which ASSA ABLOY supports, including BREEAM, LEED, and WELL.

The last edition of this Report found significant knowledge gaps between physical and cyber security professionals. However, the situation has evolved in the period since then.

A large majority of 2025 survey respondents (84%) feel their organisation is already compliant, or in the process of ensuring compliance, or that these regulations are not relevant to them. With NIS2 coming into force and obligations under the EU Cyber Resilience Act approaching, this remains an area where customers and manufacturers must continue close cooperation.

The Report also finds plenty of evidence that mobile credentials – and mobile access management in general – are booming, as widely forecasted. Fully mobile credential environments now account for 17% of all respondents, more than triple the rate seen in the 2023 edition of the report.

As so many organisations modernise their security infrastructure, integrated digital access is becoming industry-standard, with a clear shift to mobile credentials. 

Convenience, reliability and enhanced security are the key benefits which have driven adoption – and will continue to do so, the Report suggests.
