Prototype Machinist

The Prototype Machinist is responsible for fabricating, assembling, and modifying precision components and prototypes to support engineering and product development within EMS. This role works closely with design engineers to translate concepts into functional parts, ensuring accuracy, quality, and timely delivery. In addition to prototype work, this position will also assist in machining parts for fixtures and equipment, perform rework on existing components, and provide support for limited production runs as needed.

 

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS & RESPONSIBILITIES

To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential function satisfactorily:

 

  • Technical aspects
    • Set up and operate manual and CNC machines (mills, lathes, grinders) to produce prototype parts, tools/equipment parts, re-works, production, etc.
    • Interpret engineering drawings, CAD models, and specifications to ensure dimensional accuracy.
    • Perform precision measurements using calipers, micrometers, and other inspection tools.
    • Modify and troubleshoot parts during development to meet design intent.
    • Learn and implement new technologies/processes to improve prototyping and production when necessary.

 

  • Tools used (computer programs)
    • CAD/CAM software (e.g., SolidWorks, Mastercam)
    • CNC machine controllers – Preferably HAAS
    • MS Office Suite for documentation and communication
    • ERP, MES system, etc.

 

  • Other duties
    • Maintain a clean and organized work area.
    • Collaborate with engineers to provide feedback on manufacturability.
    • Assist in continuous improvement initiatives for machining processes.

QUALIFICATIONS

The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skills, and/or abilities required for this position. 

 

Education and/or Experience:

  • 10 years of machining & programming experience
  • Associate’s degree (A.A.) or equivalent from two-year college, technical school or apprenticeship.

 

Computer Skills

  • Proficiency in MS Office
  • CAD Software – Preferably Solidworks
  • CAM Software – Preferably MecSoft
