Stadium can bet on security

The Olympic Stadium in Berlin, the largest arena in Germany, attracts thousands of visitors a year. The busy multifunctional venue, which has hosted events such as the 1974 FIFA World Cup, needed a highly flexible, comprehensive security concept.

That’s why the stadium operator chose Ikon’s Verso Cliq locking system when changing from a mechanical locking system to a mechatronic one, says Sylvan Bandke, Technical Manager at Olympiastadion.

“Verso Cliq provides us with an optimum standard of security,” he says. “It lets us benefit from a security system that combines highly developed microelectronics with intelligent data encryption. This provides several advantages, including the ability to reprogram locking cylinders quickly, and reducing the security risk associated with lost keys.” 

Bandke says the stadium hosts so many events and hosts such a high volume of visitors, it is important that the security system has programmable locking cylinders. “That way, we can provide individual event organizers and their subcontractors with flexibility in managing access authorizations,” he explains.

And if an event organizer fails to return the keys, the Verso Cliq system means they can easily be inactivated without the expense of having to replace locking cylinders.

Bandke says Verso Cliq’s locking cylinders could also be customized to fit doors in the historic parts of the building. “With Verso Cliq, there is no need for structural alterations or expensive cabling to the door because the keys supply the energy to operate the system and communicate with the cylinder,” he says. “This means less work and fewer expenses.”

Ikon has historic connections with the stadium, supplying the original mechanical locking system when the arena was built in 1936.

“If our locking system should need extending in 10 years’ time, the Verso Cliq system could cope without any problems: ASSA ABLOY guarantees long-term security of investment and future supplies,” Bandke says.
