Security in digital access

The first talk in the series covers Security. It may seem obvious – almost a ‘given’ these days.

Yet digitalizing access upgrades security in many valuable, and sometimes surprising, ways. Expert contributors to our Security video also map out some future issues that forward-thinking teams should be aware of. Mechanical and digital security must work together

One message upon which ASSA ABLOY’s security experts agree is the symbiotic relationship between mechanical and digital security. Our decades of experience in traditional locking places us uniquely to ensure security performs consistently across mechanical and digital access devices, including wireless.

Digital does not replace mechanical, as Kelly Gill, Chief Technology Officer at ASSA ABLOY Opening Solutions EMEIA, explains in a recent article. Rather, it enhances it with additional layers of security and identity verification, to produce results which benefit the customer by providing a concrete ROI from digitalization.

Within a digital door device, mechanical and digital components must work together. The mechanical backbone is as important as the digital technology inside.

 

Digital access and cyber-security

In a world of emerging and evolving security threats, building users need the reassurance of effective access management to go about their daily work.

As security converges, moving beyond physical and cyber ‘siloes’, the right digital access solution enables management teams to define exactly who goes where, and when, across all their sites. It’s no longer enough to have robust, reliable devices if they don’t have the right cyber protection.

For this reason, cyber-security compliance will soon be required for any digital product sold within the EU market. Yet many ‘traditional’ security staff remain unsure about the relevance of cyber protections. In research for one recent ASSA ABLOY market report, 55% of security professionals surveyed did not recognize 4 important regional laws and directives which are (or soon will be) critical to cyber- and physical security.

Staying ahead of these regulations and ensuring digital access adopters understand their importance was another key motivation for making this video – and for this series as a whole. This first of our Expert Talks can help security and access stakeholders to face these and other future security challenges with greater confidence.
