Enhancing Campus Security and Efficiency at the University of Pretoria with ASSA ABLOY

Pretoria, South Africa — In a bold move to modernize campus security and streamline operations, the University of Pretoria has successfully implemented over 6,600 Mul-T-Lock Temporary Lock-Out (TLO) units across its student residential buildings. This large-scale deployment, in partnership with ASSA ABLOY, marks a significant step forward in creating a safer, more efficient academic environment.

A Campus-Wide Challenge

By 2009, the University of Pretoria faced mounting challenges with its outdated key systems. A mix of cylinder and 2-lever locks had become increasingly vulnerable to unauthorized duplication and master key theft. Maintenance and security teams struggled with access control across the sprawling campus, leading to frequent lockouts and administrative delays.

A Mechanical Solution with Modern Impact

To address these issues, the university turned to ASSA ABLOY’s Mul-T-Lock TLO Cylinder System—a fully mechanical, high-security solution that offers flexible access control without the need for electronics or software.

The project included:

6,600 Mul-T-Lock TLO lock units installed across 30 student residences.

6 buildings equipped with the patented Interactive+® key system.

24 buildings using the Classic Mul-T-Lock system, known for its durability and reliability.

How the TLO System Works

The Mul-T-Lock TLO system features a unique four-key mechanism:

Blue Key – Standard access for students and staff.

Red Lockout Key – Temporarily disables all blue keys.

Green Reversal Key – Restores access after a lockout.

White Override Key – Always grants access, regardless of lockout status.

This intuitive system allows campus administrators to manage access with precision—ideal for securing student rooms during holidays, protecting storerooms, and preventing unauthorized weekend access to service areas.

Results That Speak for Themselves

“ASSA ABLOY’s system gave us the control we needed. It’s internationally approved, reliable, and has significantly improved our campus security,”

— Riaan de la Rey, Maintenance Department, University of Pretoria

The implementation has not only enhanced security but also reduced operational inefficiencies. The university no longer needs to replace cylinders or collect keys during lockouts, saving time and resources.

A Future-Ready Campus

With this scalable and robust mechanical solution in place, the University of Pretoria has laid the foundation for a future-ready access management system—one that prioritizes safety, simplicity, and sustainability.
