Resistance-free door use with Free-Motion

Sometimes the safety and security of a door closer creates its own barrier to comfortable opening and closing. Free-Motion technology ensures fire, smoke and other doors offer true barrier-free access for everyone.

Free-Motion door closers combine safety and convenience. Doors open without resistance and can be left open at any angle. As soon as Free-Motion is deactivated, the door shuts and full door closer functionality returns.

Free-Motion helps building managers to tailor a door’s use for maximum convenience. Heavy doors and fire doors no longer hinder anyone’s movement around a building.

How it works

Free-Motion doors enjoy best of both worlds: the safety and security of a door closer plus the convenience of “free swing” operation.

The technology disables automatic closing, so the door may be left open at any angle and building users move around without experiencing the resistance of a door closer.

A door fitted with a Free-Motion closer shuts automatically when its power is cut, whether manually or in the event of an outage or emergency.

Free-Motion benefits

  • Even heavy EN size 6 fire and smoke doors open almost weightlessly for greater freedom of movement
  • “Free swing” functionality begins from the very first degree of opening, removing access barriers for every user who follows
  • When integrated with a fire system, doors close automatically when smoke or fire is detected
  • Flexible range includes products for leaf- or frame-mounting, single or double doors, or with integrated smoke detector

For more than just fire doors

ASSA ABLOY Free-Motion door closers have many applications beyond fire and smoke doors. At any door where barrier-free access is a must, building managers maximize security and comfort by fitting a Free-Motion door closer.

In a setting used by older or less-able people, for example, Free-Motion technology helps them move around independently without sacrificing building security.

It also gives building managers more flexibility. For example, Free-Motion may be enabled during office hours to allow easy movement, then deactivated overnight, so the door closes automatically after each use.
