Historic Sachsenturm relies on modern access solution from ASSA ABLOY

The challenge

The Sachsenturm tower is one of the important relics of the medieval Cologne fortress and was part of a system of a total of 52 towers built between 1179 and 1259. After the extensive demolition of the city wall at the end of the 19th century, only a few of these structures remained. Since 1959, the once heavily damaged tower has served as the home of the traditional Blaue Funken, or “Blue Sparks”, corps. With the reconstruction, initiated in 1969 by the non-profit construction association Gemeinnütziger Bauverein Sachsenturm e.V., the historic building gradually developed into a vibrant cultural venue. In 1991, it was finally granted protected status as a monument of the state of North Rhine-Westphalia. Today, the Sachsenturm combines history and modern use: An extension building with two halls and around 200 square metres of event space creates space for weddings, company events and cultural events. The diverse uses – from carnival activities to guided tours and events – create dynamic access management requirements. A locking solution was therefore required that would meet the high security requirements of a listed property, but also respond flexibly to changing public traffic and enable simple, efficient management for different event scenarios.

Solution

In close coordination with the specialist partner Schmidt + Meldau GmbH, the decision was made in favour of an eCLIQ master key system from the IKON brand. A total of 48 electronic locking cylinders were installed in the Sachsenturm and in adjacent areas such as the extension building, the storage areas for carnival floats, the workshop and the letterbox. 60 keys are available for different user groups such as carnival management, administration, technical teams, catering and guests. Thanks to long-lasting battery technology, these ensure reliable function in daily use. Visual and acoustic feedback also ensures intuitive operation. Especially in busy environments, the system impresses with its combination of security and flexibility: Thanks to their discreet appearance, the electronic components integrate harmoniously into the listed building structure and at the same time enable modern access control. Access rights can be assigned individually and for a limited period of time, which significantly reduces organisational effort.
