Challenge:

With a capacity of 66,500 spectators, MERKUR SPIEL-ARENA is the largest multi-purpose arena in Düsseldorf. Thanks to a lockable roof and state-of-the-art heating, the arena with an interior area of over 10,000 m2 can be used for a wide range of events all year round, regardless of the weather.

MERKUR SPIEL-ARENA originally used a mechanical master key system. Due to regular key losses and high level of inconvenience, D.LIVE, as the operator of the arena, began looking for a new user-friendly solution: On the one hand, the rooms used by themselves had to be secured, but on the other hand, it also had to be possible to manage the rented areas and rooms easily. One of the biggest challenges is the regular and constantly changing major events, such as football games and concerts. D.LIVE had also already gained experience with electronic knob cylinders in other event buildings and halls in Düsseldorf. However, this system was not satisfactory due to the low battery life of less than a year in some cases and the associated frequent and costly battery changes on the doors. Cylinder knobs are also often kicked off in football stadiums.

Solution:

Based on these requirements and experiences, D.LIVE chose an electronic eCLIQ locking system from the IKON brand, which scores highly on security. This means that each Connect key can be programmed individually for each user and access authorisations can be withdrawn individually by Bluetooth at any time if a key is lost, for example. Authorisations can also be temporarily enabled for tradesmen, cleaning staff and external event service providers, for example. In addition to the security aspect, a high degree of flexibility also plays a major role: eCLIQ is easy to handle and program as, for example, the power supply and communication with the cylinder take place via the key. This means that no wiring is required for the very low-maintenance cylinder which is installed flush with the fitting and thus offers no attack surface for vandalism. This also means very simple and quick installation, as only two weeks were available for the conversion of all doors when no events were taking place in the arena.
