One stadium, thousands of doors – MERKUR SPIEL-ARENA in Düsseldorf modernised with eCLIQ

Merkur Spiel Arena

It has 66,500 seats, hosts major international events, and has a constantly changing array of organisers. The MERKUR SPIEL-ARENA in Düsseldorf is a place where nothing is static. While visitors may perceive an event as running smoothly, those responsible behind the scenes face a series of new organisational, security and technical challenges.

A new promotional film provides insight into the project to modernise the arena's security technology. The video shows how the technical challenges were transformed into a successful large-scale project, and explains why the flexibility of the new eCLIQ locking solution was one of the key success factors.

In the period leading up to the project, Lukas Angenendt, the electrical engineering project manager at D.LIVE, had to deal with one fundamental question: Who is allowed to go where and when? And how can a stadium of this size be managed securely, efficiently, and as flexibly as possible? The existing mechanical master key system was no longer suitable. Too inflexible, too costly, too outdated for a venue where every event brings new user groups and unforeseen difficulties.

The solution sought was one that would offer maximum flexibility and security as well as a high level of user-friendliness with minimal maintenance. The project involves over 2,500 doors and more than 1,000 keys in circulation, as well as various security requirements. Every aspect, from VIP boxes and technical rooms to elevators, switch cabinets and outdoor areas, must be considered, and all within an extremely tight timeframe.

The system had to be installed within a 14-day period during which Fortuna Düsseldorf, a second-division club, did not have any home games. No time-consuming modifications to the doors. No long downtimes. All this was achievable with the eCLIQ electronic locking system from ASSA ABLOY's IKON brand. The system is designed to withstand the harsh conditions of large-scale event operations without a hitch.

In addition to the extremely simple installation of the locking system, eCLIQ now allows access rights to be flexibly assigned, revoked or adapted – even at short notice. The electronic keys are conveniently kept current via Bluetooth and the corresponding application via the CLIQ Web Manager before utilisation. And even in the event of a key being lost, control is retained at all times. Deprogramming of keys is uncomplicated, and the deletion of access authorisations is simple.

The video impressively showcases the complexity of the project, giving the various participants and the security implementation partner, Gölzner GmbH, a chance to share their insights. It also demonstrates how modern security technology is being realised in one of Germany's largest event venues.
