How to choose the right door handles

When selecting door handles for a project, there are many elements to take into account. Let us help you with this guide

What is the difference between handles and knobs?

The main difference between a door handle and a door knob is that a door knob has a circular head to operate the opening and closing mechanism, whereas a door handle is a lever that can be gripped.

What handle is best for my project?

The door handle you choose depends on the use of the door, as well as the style you prefer. You will also need to consider the type of door, i.e., whether it is a fire door.

Terminology

·         Sprung is a term used to indicate that a door handle or door knob is fitted with a spring in the backplate or rose, which means the door handle will return to position once released

·         Unsprung refers to a handle which will use the door lock itself to return to position

·         Concealed fixings describe fixings that are not visible once the product is fitted

·         Bolt through fixings connect a pair of handles together through the door, creating a secure fixing that will last longer providing a maintenance-free lifespan

Should I choose a door lever, knob or pull handle?

The door lever or pull handle you choose depends on the use of each door in the building, as well as the style you prefer. Some people prefer door knobs, while others like door levers and pull handles for ease of use and accessibility.

What are the best handles for fire doors?

Fire doors act as an essential barrier against flames and smoke and all the hardware fitted on a fire doorset, including any handles, should be fire-rated. To meet the necessary standards, a fire doorset must pass one or a series of standardised tests, as well as being correctly certified and rated to withstand fire for a set period of time. This testing should be conducted by an accredited independent testing body, in accordance with the relevant British or European standards.

Our range of fire door handles accompany fire doors to ensure that you have the utmost protection in the event of a fire.

Are there magnetic door handles?

We do not offer door handles that work with a magnetic function. However, our range does include electromagnetic locks and electromagnetic door closers.

Types of legislation

The legislation governing door handles is EN 1906. This standard classifies door furniture by using an 8 coded format to detail the performance of the product to ensure the standard is complementary to its application in terms of durability, safety, fire resistance and more.
