“There were many reasons to choose eCLIQ. Two of them were modular battery-free cylinders that can be customized individually, along with sturdy and extremely user-friendly keys,” says Udo Eichelmann, Engineering & Medical Technology Division at University Medical Center Mainz.

Challenge

The Medical Center of Johannes Gutenberg University, Mainz, is the only medical institution for supramaximal care in Rhineland-Palatinate and an internationally approved location for science and research. It combines over 60 clinics, institutes, and departments which collaborate across disciplines and both inpatient and outpatient treatment, including for specialized patient care, research, and teaching. Approximately 3,700 students of human and dental medicine – plus around 590 trainees in various healthcare, commercial, and technical fields – earn their qualifications here. 403,000 patients rely on the Medical Center every year.

With around 9,000 employees, the University Medical Center is also one of the largest employers in the region and an important driver of growth and innovation. Managers sought a new flexible and, above all, uniform electronic locking solution.

Key requirements

  • A digital system which could unify control at the campus, across day-clinics, institutes, wards, lecture halls, outpatient clinics, and offices
  • Flexibility in the device offering required to meet the needs of almost any door or installation situation at the campus
  • A range of proven devices which all meet the latest security standards for both general and specialist usage

Solution

University Medical Center managers decided on the eCLIQ smart key access solution from ASSA ABLOY, which combines maximum flexibility with intuitive digital management. This reliable solution also sets itself apart with robust, secure wire-free locking devices. For example, the broad cylinder spectrum – with more than 60 available variants – means the hospital could find a lock suitable for any environment, including laboratories which need ATEX certification. The eCLIQ cylinders have no knobs, making them well suited for hospital environments where beds roll through corridors and doors – and could catch on a knob or other protrusion. No batteries are required in the cylinders: lock electronics are powered by batteries inside user keys.

Management is via CLIQ Web Manager (CWM) software, a scalable, flexible, web-based platform which is especially good for efficient management of large systems and/or large-scale sites like a campus. CWM is also crucial for enabling hospital facilities managers to change access authorizations quickly and flexibly: they can issue, amend, or delete access permissions whenever needed. Authorizations with time and room restrictions are also simplified so, for instance, technicians may be issued a single authorization for a specific task or cleaners granted access at specific times of day only. This is much safer than the “blanket access” given by a mechanical key.
