Challenge In 2013, ASSA ABLOY Australia updated its new product gateway process and incorporated the Sustainable Packaging Guidelines as a mandatory element. This means environmental issues relating to product packaging are now a standard part of the business. Solution The design of primary packaging is done as a collaborative activity within the company. Packaging engineers, product management and purchasing teams are key collaborators from the beginning. Locally-based suppliers are also involved.This change means that discussions regarding packaging begin earlier on in the process, which enables and encourages teams to look further and find alternatives when needed. Result A successful initiative was “shelf-ready” product packaging, resulting in the consolidation of packaging elements. Working with suppliers, ASSA ABLOY coordinated a new packaging system, removing one layer of packaging in addition to separating shelf-display boxes. At the point of purchase, this resulted in packaging material reductions and easier stock handling for the customer.Suppliers also benefit through decreased costs in labelling and transport, and increased productivity. The initiative saw ASSA ABLOY Australia receive a 2014 Australian Packaging Covenant (APC) award in the Hardware and Homewares category. Packaging sustainability and fulfilling the APC’s requirements are points of differentiation for ASSA ABLOY in the hardware industry.
