Fargo helps banks make cards in a flash

ASSA ABLOY’s HID Global, the trusted source for secure-identity solutions, is using its Fargo High-Definition Printing (HDP) technology to produce instantly issued financial cards for banks and credit unions. This solution has been adopted by more than 10 institutions in the Americas and several pilots are ongoing throughout the globe.

The company, which makes solutions for access and identification-related applications, is using Fargo’s superior printing quality to help banks reduce the amount of time it takes for customers to receive a card-based product such as: debit cards, EMV cards, credit cards or gift cards.

"Debit cards are where flat-panel technology is taking off," says Isaac Young, business development manager for HID Global. "A customer can come in, open an account and walk out minutes later with a personalized debit card, getting instant gratification and increasing bank revenues."

The largest instant issuance program in North America is being offered by TD Banknorth, a banking and financial services company based in Maine. TD Banknorth is using Dynamic Card Solutions’ CardWizard FCP 20/20, an OEM product based on HID’s successful line of Fargo HDP ID card printers, in hundreds of its branches and will expand its current footprint to include over a thousand branches by the end of 2009.

TD Banknorth is offering its customers a flat-panel, or non-embossed, Visa® debit card and an individual PIN when they open a personal or business checking account. The cards can be used immediately at ATMs and retailers.

One of the ways banks benefit from instant issuance is by increasing the percentage of cards activated. Traditionally only 60 percent of cards received in the mail are activated. Instantly issued cards are presented to customers in an activated state, increasing the percentage of cards activated to 100 percent! An increase in card activation rates mean an increase in card usage, and ultimately more revenue for the financial institution.
