The new standard helps gauge the environmental and human health impacts of various products. Underwriters Laboratories (UL) is an independent product safety certification organization. Its new UL 102 standard provides detailed requirements that can be used to evaluate the complete environmental impact of a door over its life cycle. The new energy-efficient Trio-E door design incorporates redesigned stiffeners that do not extend for the full length of the door and are also lighter than they were previously, because they are perforated. The shorter stiffeners create a thermal break within the interior of the door that reduces energy transfer and consumption. In addition, there are no longer any visible welds, which means that no grinding is required, resulting in labor, material and power savings. The quality of the work environment has also improved as exposure to grinding dust has been reduced. The end result is that the Trio-E door is an effective thermal barrier that combines the security of a steel-stiffened door with the aesthetic qualities expected in modern commercial buildings. The Trio-E is the most energy-efficient steel-stiffened door on the market – up to 39 percent more efficient than comparable products, having achieved an operable U Factor (a measure of overall transmission of heat) of 0.29. Trio-E is also GREENGUARD Children & Schools certified, meaning that it complies with the State of California’s Department of Public Health Services Standard Practice for Specification Section 01350 (California Section 01350) for testing chemical emissions from building products used in schools and other environments. It is also approved by the US Green Building Council’s Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) certification system, as well as the International Green Construction Code (IGCC).
