Saving water the ASSA ABLOY way /Global/Sustainability/photos/Save%20a%20flush%20524x224.jpg ASSA ABLOY’s Portobello site in the UK saves water on every flush. The Portobello site has older, less efficient toilets and to save water, all the cisterns were fitted with Hippo bags, or Save-a-Flush bags, to reduce the amount used by at least one litre per flush. With over 20 toilets – and 300 employees – a lot of water is saved each day. The solution may not be very high tech but it is incredibly effective. Hippo and Save-a-Flush bags contain harmless crystals that swell and displace water so less is used per flush. A Hippo bag – for cisterns with a 9-liter flush or greater – can save up to 3 litres per flush or 5000 litres per person per year. For smaller cisterns, Save-a-Flush bags can save 1 litres per flush.
