Challenge The US Green Building Council (USGBC) LEED Platinum certification is reserved for premises that earn the highest levels of green building elements in the LEED certification program. According to the USGBC, only 6 percent of LEED certified projects have attained LEED Platinum certification. The LEED certification program implements practical and measurable strategies and solutions aimed at achieving high performance in sustainable site development, water savings, energy efficiency, materials selection and indoor environmental quality. Solution HID Global’s Austin building was designed from the ground up for sustainability, starting with site selection and extending through design and construction. Features like water-efficient landscaping cut potable water use by more than 71 percent, and indoor potable water use has also been reduced by 35 percent. What’s more, lighting power consumption has been cut by over 46 percent through LED fixture selection, and electricity usage by at least 30 percent through exclusive selection of Energy Star-qualified office equipment and appliances. Result HID Global is the only industrial manufacturing facility in Texas to achieve LEED Platinum certification. The company’s sustainability program has also extended to other initiatives, including becoming the first global access control manufacturer to offer an Environmental Product Declaration for an access control reader that communicates the product’s environmental impact, from design to usage. Additional facts about the project The Austin facility features controllable lighting systems that reduce lighting energy consumption and air conditioning requirements, including the use of daylight controls near windows, and occupancy sensors. Thermal comfort verification minimizes energy use for air conditioning while enhancing thermal comfort conditions. Construction and waste management reduced demand for virgin resources and minimized environmental impacts associated with resource extraction, processing and transportation.
