Fire doors on a growth path

In July 2008, ASSA ABLOY acquired Beijing Tianming’s fire-rated door business. For ASSA ABLOY, Tianming is an excellent compliment in China, and with the increased enforcement of fire and safety regulations, continued good growth is expected.

Jim Heng Lee, General Manager of APAC Door Group:

What specific requirements are there in the new Chinese standard for buildings, and what does this mean for ASSA ABLOY?

“The new security standard is more centralized and introduces a clearer product rating system. China Security and Protection Industry Associations (CSPIA) is the governing body, which will hopefully mean that the new regulations will have increased transparency. In addition, the new fire standard, to be implemented next year, will also improve the construction requirements for different door grading with clear definition. The standard and regulations helps the customers to understand and distinguish the product quality. Tianming became a member of fire door standard drafting committee in 1986 with significant influence in Chinese standard for fire doors, while ASSA ABLOY-Wangli is the drafting member of the standard for security doors.”

Is there a difference between public buildings and buildings for private people, and in that case, what is that difference?

“In China, central government encourages citizens to own their apartments from the open markets. The front door of residential buildings in China is mainly a security door, called anti-theft door, with a required multi-point lock, called anti-theft lock. There is also a trend towards electronic/digital locks like code, proximity, and finger-print. The in-doors of residential buildings are mainly wooden doors with mortise lock types and more trim design choices.”

What is the company’s biggest contribution to the ASSA ABLOY Group?

“Tianming has a long history in the business and brings an established and proven door technology to the table. We developed China’s first fire-rated steel door already in 1983. In 1985, we were the first in China to develop a steel fire rolling shutter door and the year after that, we participated in and took charge of the constitution of fire door and rolling shutter door’s national standard."

“We have a systematic price control and an experienced team in project management. Since we emphasize in after-sales services and have significant project references, we have earned good reputation in the market place. Tianming has provided door solutions for the Olympic venues as well as monuments, airports and other famous buildings in China.”

What is the overall strategy/goal for ASSA ABLOY Door Group the coming year?
“Our Market strategy is to focus on higher value segments. Security and fire safety doors vouch for sustainable growth, and a growing niche is detention, armor, and eco-friendly doors. We hope to reach major market coverage with specification focus, direct sales to developers, contractors, fire-rated products companies and architectural institutes.”

“The Tianming factory layout is spacious enough to make place for future expansion.
We will also strengthen our R&D and Major Account Departments to best serve customers with total door opening solutions. Another strategy is to start penetrate national markets through indirect distribution; national agents are established in Shanghai and Tsingdao, and we are planning to build up the network to cover 3rd tiers cities in 2010.”
