Health and safety

A safe and sound workplace is a basic requirement for any employee and business, and ASSA ABLOY must offer just that.

The objective is always to have zero accidents in the workplace.
In 2013, the Group’s health and safety performance improved significantly, breaking a negative trend. All units increased health and safety monitoring and implemented stricter safety routines. Altogether, the units developed their health and safety monitoring and reporting systems to increase the level of detail.

Despite well-anchored and systematic health and safety work, the high number of acquisitions challenges the ability to uphold a positive health and safety performance. It takes some time until a new unit is fully integrated and works and reports according to the Group’s guidelines.

A safe workplace

Each employee is expected to contribute to a safe work- place and the individual responsibility is the foundation of ASSA ABLOY’s approach to health and safety.
Each manager has the responsibility to identify risks, take proactive actions and facilitate the right behavior. This includes:

  • facility reviews
  • monitoring the use of safety equipment
  • ensuring that employees have adequate training.

The production units have their own health and safety committees, which include union representatives where applicable. The committees are responsible for:

  • reporting on health and safety performance
  • taking the lead on actions for improvement
  • following up so that adequate training takes place

Operational risks

ASSA ABLOY has identified that the Group’s health and safety risks are mainly related to:

  • cutting and crushing injuries
  • production-related noise
  • heavy lifting and traffic (these pose the biggest risks in service and maintenance)

Risk management is part of the everyday health and safety work at all units.

Learning from each other

ASSA ABLOY wants to utilize the knowledge and expertise that exists within the Group. One way to achieve this is to systemically share best practices through councils for different functional areas. Also, semi-annual internal reporting is made available to the entire Group on the basis that transparency leads to improvement.
