Chongqing Grand Theater unlike any other

ASSA ABLOY brand Doormax delivered the right products, on time and with the right support for the prestigious Chongqing Grand Theater.

Situated on a headland above the Yangtze River and directly across the water from Chongqing’s business district, the Chongqing Grand Theater looks like a fantastic ship that has been anchored in the middle of this sprawling city in southwestern China.

The building was designed by German architects GMP and opened in 2009. It houses two separate theaters, a cinema and an exhibition hall. Naturally, a 100,000 square-meter building as individual and unique as this demands some special door and entry solutions.

"The building is not like a regular office," says George Jiang, general manager of project sales at Shenfei Liyi Security Products, which markets the brand Doormax. "The architects had very special design requirements and it was a challenge to meet these, particularly with the building's custom-designed doors and windows."

Doormax met the challenge – and beat the competition for the USD 500,000 contract. With technical skills, and by working closely with the architect to provide a total solution that included commercial-grade locks, door closers, emergency exit devices and accessories.

"We supplied considerable technical support from the start. Using our own local manufacturer enabled us to supply modified hardware and construct special products with a short lead time," Jiang says. "The Grand Theater is an important building for Chonqing, and represents a major investment on behalf of the municipal government. The ability to deliver the right products, on time and with the right support, was a critical factor in the success of the entire theater project."
