The operating margins of the engineering industry have been the main factor in the profit boom of the last few years. At first sight, today's situation looks risky and frightening to the engineering industry.

ASSA ABLOY, for example, could experience a 6 percent slaughter of its margin. But probably it will not come to that. For most companies, ASSA ABLOY included, there are other reasons for the increasing operating margin. In ASSA ABLOY's case the operating margin has increased due to new goodwill regulations - the company was no longer forced to write off goodwill.
